毛白杨为杨柳科、杨属落叶大乔木，生长快，树干通直挺拔，树形优美，是一个优良的造林绿化树种，毛白杨广泛应用于城乡绿化，其品种适应性强，主根和侧根发达，枝叶茂密，优质，速生，丰产，为速生用材林，防护林和行道河渠绿化的好树种。
      
    毛白杨是大名鼎鼎的落叶乔木，高达30米--40米，生长迅速，10年成才一点也没问题，因木材轻而细密，淡黄褐色，纹理直，易加工，可供建筑、家具、胶合板、造纸及人造纤维等用。
      
    毛白杨树干端直，树形高大广阔，颇具雄伟气概，加上抗烟尘和抗污染能力强，也常被作为行道树。杨柳科都是雌雄异株，毛白杨雄株花开得比较早，3月中上旬，叶子还没长满树就挂满黑色的“毛毛虫”(杨柳科多数花序叫柔荑花序，像一个下垂的狗尾巴草花穗)，树叶快长出来的时候黑色“毛毛虫”就掉光了，所以雄株不飘絮。讨人烦的杨絮是雌株惹的祸，刚开始雌株的花序也是黑色的像毛毛虫，但“毛毛虫”不掉，而是很快变成绿色，与叶子一起生长，等到4月中旬叶子长满树冠的时候它也开始飘絮了。
